Eyes of Innocence

…Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.  –Mark 10:14

Long ago I saw through eyes of innocence;
My first response was always to believe.
But when I took my first few steps beyond the garden fence,
I wondered how I could be so naive.
The things I thought I’d always see were suddenly all gone;
The purest love had somehow been defiled.
Some words which lingered I could hardly put my finger on,
Just something I remembered as a child:

“Suffer the little children to come to Me, to come to Me
“And forbid them not,” is what Jesus said.
I pray like a little child to be, I pray like a little child to be.

Then I knew that Jesus saw me just the same
As little children precious in His sight.
I almost had forgotten till I rested in His name
Just how it was to sleep so well at night.
The guilt I thought I’d always feel was suddenly all gone;
The purest love had somehow been restored.
The peace which guards my heart now I can’t put a value on,
Now that I am His child and He’s my Lord.
